The Treaty of Waitangi and School Governance

The Board is accountable for the performance of the school, with a key focus on raising student achievement for all students. This includes making decisions that support Māori learners to enjoy and achieve education success, as Māori.

To support boards achieve this aim NZSTA has developed a set of resources and video clips. The resources are focused on enabling trustees to better understand the Treaty and emphasise the responsibility boards have in ensuring that the implications, obligations and spirit of the Treaty are implemented and upheld.

The Treaty of Waitangi and School Governance information booklet

Many boards want to move beyond simplistic acknowledgement of the Treaty to practices that are evidence based and culturally responsive. This resource offers trustees an overview of the Treaty articles in the context of education. It aims to:

 

 












Board activities and inquiry scenarios
He ngohe hei whakaū, he kitenga hei whakawai

This resource includes a set of activities, inquiry scenarios, references and online resources that help boards to think about practical ways that they can best achieve Māori educational success as Māori. These scenarios aim to stimulate board thinking and responses individually and as a group.
















Snapshots of school and community change
He mataaho whakaatu panonitanga

These digital clips offer snapshots of how different schools are being pro-active about affirming Māori language, identity and culture, in order to benefit the whole school. The clips aim to encourage board of trustees, teachers and parents about how they ensure Māori students achieve educational success as Māori.
